Harry A. Garfield correspondence, 1908-1934.

This series contains correspondence that is often routine, but provides insight into Garfield's positions on a wide variety of national and educational issues. Garfield's involvement in national issues is evident in correspondence with Herbert Hoover and Margaret Sanger. Correspondence between Garfield and the presidents of other colleges provides information concerning curriculum changes, professors' salaries, the acceptance of Jewish and African-American students, and fraternities at Williams. A great deal of information about the Student Army Training Corps at Williams can be found in the correspondence with Major General William A. Pew, commander of the Corps, 1917-1919. Garfield's position on race-related issues and students of color can be traced through his correspondence with Sidney Powers, the National Vigilance Association, John A. Miller, Fisk University, W.E.B. DuBois and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, Inc., to name just a few. Garfield's position on Jewish students at Williams may be located in such files as Howard J. Rogers, Harvard University, Yale University, The Nation, etc.
